Listening, Learning and Improving: The Denver Hospice Employee Council

At The Denver Hospice, we believe improving the way we care for patients and families begins with listening to the people who provide that care every day.

As part of that commitment, The Denver Hospice recently created an Employee Council. The Council brings together employees from all levels and areas of the organization, creating an opportunity for team members to share their perspectives, contribute ideas and have a voice in conversations that shape the future of our organization.

The goal is to strengthen communication, support thoughtful strategic decision-making and help foster a workplace culture grounded in transparency and trust.

Employees were invited to apply to serve on the Council and were asked to share why they wanted to participate. The responses demonstrated the thoughtfulness, passion and commitment our employees bring to their work every day.

One response, in particular, captured the spirit of what we hope the Council will represent:

“My motivation for joining the The Denver Hospice Council comes from a genuine desire to contribute to a community that values collaboration, accountability, and forward-thinking leadership. I’m drawn to spaces where people are willing to challenge assumptions, elevate standards, and build systems that actually work for the people they’re meant to serve.

I’m interested in the Council because I see it as an opportunity to bring my perspective, my lived experience, and my commitment to thoughtful problem-solving into a group that’s shaping meaningful outcomes. I’m motivated by the chance to help strengthen communication, support strategic decision-making, and contribute to a culture where transparency and trust are prioritized.

Ultimately, I want to be part of a team that’s not just maintaining the status quo but actively improving it — and I believe the TDH Council is the right place to do that.”

That desire to improve — rather than simply maintain the status quo — is at the heart of the Employee Council.

Hospice and palliative care are deeply personal, and the work we do requires compassion, collaboration and a willingness to continually learn. Creating meaningful opportunities for employees to share their experiences and ideas helps The Denver Hospice identify what is working, recognize opportunities for growth and make informed decisions about the future.

Most importantly, it reinforces something we value deeply: every employee has a perspective worth hearing.

We’re grateful to the employees who stepped forward to serve on the Council and to everyone across The Denver Hospice who contributes their ideas, expertise and experience each day. Together, we can continue looking for better ways to support our employees and provide compassionate care to patients and families facing advanced illness.
